FFA Northern Ploughing Championships 2015
Foggy FFA Final - An Organisers Nightmare!
Ford & Fordson Associations Northern Ploughing Championships were held on Sunday the 1st of November at Hartley Farms, Selby near Tadcaster. The ploughing took place on a 200 acre field with kind permission of Paul Saxton of JE Hartley Farms.
Just 2 days before the event we had up to 2" of rain. Luckily Saturday came fine and bright. As you are all aware setting up a ploughing match is not a five minute job, so Saturday was an early start with pegging out plots, putting up signs, sorting best areas for car parking due to the heavy rain of previous days. This was completed just as the light was fading. Myself, Sian and All who helped were please with the results and we are looking forward to the next days ploughing - what a rush.
Sunday 6am looked out the window...... FOG that's all we needed
Gates open and gateway straitened up by 7.30am, Ploughmen arriving soon after. Some...infact quite a few needed a bit of help to get to the parking area, nothing a good Fordson tractor couldnt manage and they were soon sorted out.
The fog became worse but by 10am all 70 competitors had disappeared (yes literally disappeared !!) into
the fog to their plots, by 11am it cleared slightly and we could just see ½ way down a mile long field.
Darren Easter & Pete Gilson not letting the fog spoil a good days ploughing
The fog stayed all day but did not deter any of the keen ploughmen who turned out some excellent plots and were well judged by a good team of judges.

After the prize giving, it was towing out time. When all had gone and with the sweep down on the roadway areas, it was dark and a well-earned 5 minute rest followed.
We are already organising next year's Northern Ploughing Championship with the site already fixed and great plans to make next years another very highly successful FFA Northern Final. Let just hope there is no fog this time !!
We hope to see you All at next years event.
Thanks to all our Sponsors and helpers for making the 2015 match another success.
